TIPS | Tips For Making Flatlays

tips for making flatlaysMaking flatlays to share on Instagram is something I really like to do. Collecting multiple objects and props, putting them all together and placing them in a specific composition. It can take quite some time, but the results are worth it. I love creating content, so flatlays are part of that as well. Today I’m gonna share some tips for making flatlays.

tips for making flatlays

– Use natural light

Lighting is really important when it comes to taking pictures. What I like to do is shoot in front of my window because personally I think natural light is the best light. Especially for flatlays. Walk around your house and search for the best light. And of course, during the beginning of the day and afternoon are better than in the evening when the sun is already setting or during the day when the sun might be too bright.

– Shoot from above

Getting the right angle can be hard. But flatlays look best when you shoot them from above, from a bird’s eye view. The products will look best. This means that sometimes you have to stand on your chair, but when you create the flatlay on the floor you can just stand next to it and take the pic.

tips for making flatlays

– Choose a color scheme and theme

By choosing a color scheme and theme, it’s easier to make sure everything matches. If you’re using to much different colors the picture can become a bit chaotic. The same goes for choosing a theme. Want a summer theme? Use flip-flops, sunnies, magazines etc. This way the picture will tell a story. If you just put random items together, it won’t as much.

– Use props

When it comes to using props, the options are endless. I like to use magazines, make up items (nail polish, lipstick), sunglasses, shoes, plants, fake flowers and so much more. Sometimes even food. But make sure it still matches your theme and color scheme! Props are perfect to fill up empty space. Especially (fake) flowers or magazines work great!

tips for making flatlays

– Create a nice composition

Composition is key. Make sure there is some space between the items you’re using. This way you flatlay won’t become too chaotic. But of course if you use a magazine or a book, you can make items overlap too so the image becomes a bit more playful.

– Edit, tag & post!

After taking your picture, edit it. I use vsco cam to edit my photos and wrote a post on how I edit my instagram pictures. Then it’s time to upload it to instagram, tag the brands if you like (this might give you more exposure) and post it!

So that’s it! I really liked writing this post so I hope you guys find it helpful!
